Software in the user's computer that can access the mail servers in a local or remote network. Also known as an "e-mail client," "mail client," "mail program," and "mail reader," it provides the ability to send and receive e-mail messages and file attachments.
Full Featured
E-mail programs are local applications that typically have more features than Web-based e-mail, which uses the Web browser as the interface. For example, they may include an address book for contacts in general, not just e-mail addresses, as well as a calendar for scheduling appointments. They also include the ability to append various text signatures to the end of messages (Regards, Name, Title, Phone number, etc.).
The only downside to e-mail programs is that they must be installed in the user's machine, whereas Web-based e-mail can be accessed with a Web browser on any computer. See Internet e-mail service.
