A popular multimedia authoring program for Windows and Macintosh from Adobe, acquired from Macromedia in 2005. Source files can be run, edited and switched between Windows and Mac platforms, regardless of where they were created or last saved. In a similar way, Director can publish content for playback on both platforms, whether through a browser using the Shockwave player or as stand-alone desktop applications known as "projectors."
Director uses a bitmap-based rendering engine, allowing developers to script their content using either Adobe's proprietary Lingo syntax or JavaScript. A myriad of image, audio and video formats are supported by Director, including Flash animations and real-time 3D rendering.
