The software that creates a virtual machine environment and functions as an interface between the hardware and the guest operating systems. If the virtual machine monitor (VMM) provides the entire virtual machine process and includes all the device drivers, it is also called a "hypervisor." If it uses a guest operating system to provide the device drivers, the VMM comprises that guest operating system (service level operating system) and a "micro-hypervisor." In either case, the hypervisor is the closest to the hardware. See VMM types and virtual machine.
