Polk's SurroundBar
Designed to work with a subwoofer, Polk Audio's five-channel soundbar systems do not depend on room acoustics or critical placement in the room. Using Polk's patented Stereo Dimensional Array (SDA) technology, which stems from the late 1980s, surround sound is simulated by a combination of "acoustical engineering, psychoacoustic principles and a little magic" according to the vendor. - These days, a home-theater-in-a-box system comes in one of three basic designs: an all-in-one package that includes a built-in DVD or Blu-ray player; a "soundbar" system that consolidates everything into a single speaker bar that can be mounted under a flat-panel TV; or a component system that basically boxes...

- Let's start with a clarification: Don't confuse the Zvox Z-Base 550 Low-Profile Single Cabinet Surround Sound System ($500) with any of those seriously svelte sound bar speakers crowding the market. It's not even comparable with Zvox's previous single-speaker soundbars, the 415 ($400) and 425 ($600). Those speakers were designed to...

- Samsung HT-X810T
- If the primary appeal of soundbar speakers is based on their significant reduction of wires and clutter--as compared with 5.1-channel home theater-in-a-box systems--then Samsung's new HT-X810T soundbar should be a winner. While it's not the first single-speaker system with a built-in DVD player or a wireless subwoofer--that'd be the Philips...
