One stage or level in a set of prioritized stages or levels. Ring 0 is the lowest level, and system functions and utilities communicate with the operating system kernel at this most privileged ring. Applications access the operating system at the higher ring 3, and fewer instructions are available at this level. Although Intel has defined rings 1 and 2, they are rarely used.
