(2) (Internet EXchange Architecture) A family of chips from Intel that are designed to enable network device manufacturers to build custom systems. Introduced in 1999, the first models were the StrongARM-based IXP 1200 (Internet Exchange Processor) designed for general packet handling with six processors around its core. The IXE 2412 (Internet Exchange Engine) is a core component for building workgroup switches, and the IXF 6400 (Internet Exchange Forwarder) is designed for building carrier-class switches with port speeds up to OC-48. See StrongARM.
