A blank line on screen ready to receive instructions from the user. The Windows, Unix, Linux, Mac and DOS operating systems all have command lines that technical people use to perform a myriad of tasks more directly and efficiently than by using a graphical user interface (GUI).
For example, in Windows and DOS, the command pkzip xyz *.jpg means compress all the JPEGs into a Zip archive named XYZ.ZIP. The GUI-based equivalent would require numerous mouse clicks to perform the same task. See command processor and Windows command line.
