Founded in 1971 by Gerard and Lilo Leeds, CMP was acquired by U.K.-based United News and Media, which later changed its name to United Business Media (UBM).
In 2008, UBM eliminated the CMP name and restructured CMP into four business units reporting directly, each with its own CEO: TechWeb, Everything Channel, TechInsights and Think Services. TechWeb was formerly the Business Technology Group; Everything Channel was CMP Channel; TechInsights was the Electronics Group, and Think Services comprises the Game, Dr. Dobb's and International Customer Management Groups.
(2) (Cellular MultiProcessing) A multiprocessing architecture for Intel CPUs from Unisys. Providing up to 32 processors that are crossbar connected to 64GB of memory and 96 PCI cards, a CMP system provides mainframe-like architecture using Intel CPUs. CMP supports Windows NT and 2000 Server, AIX, NetWare and UnixWare and can be run as one large SMP system or multiple systems with different operating systems. See SMP.
Eight Subpods, Four Crossbars
A CMP subpod contains four x86 or Itanium CPUs, which connect through a third-level memory cache to the crossbar. Each crossbar supports two subpods, two direct I/O bridges (DIBs) and can connect to four memory storage units (MSUs). This diagram shows the four crossbars and all eight subpods that make up a complete CMP system.
